Mandatory Reporting

We elevate the situation when:

  1. If we have reason to believe a student is in danger of harming themselves or someone else
  2. If we have reason to believe a student is being harmed, or are being harmed by someone
  3. If a student is doing anything illegal, or suspect anything illegal is being done to you

Who should you elevate the situation too?

RUSH Small group leaders are NOT mandatory reporters when serving in their role as small group leaders. There may be some exceptions depending on their profession (teachers or licensed counselors/physicians ARE mandatory reporters). Regardless, we want small group leaders to elevate concerns they have to Crossroads RUSH leadership who will work with them to develop the best course of action.

When possible, students should be informed that information shared will be elevated and that parents and/or authorities may need to be notified, but this is NOT required.
In various conversations with legal counsel, the primary question is "What is reasonable?" Was it reasonable for the person who heard the information to report what they heard? because this can be gray at times, we try to err on the side of caution. We would rather have someone frustrated with us for breaking confidence than fail to report and have someone injured.
